Explication, Revitalisation, Temporality

The Dutch Landscape Architecture firm OKRA, as part of the revitalisation of a downtown square, installed strips of corten steel, from which light and mist emanate visibly at night. The strategy is part of a plan to explicate the history of the city. The corten steel is the width of the old wall and the light and mist makes visible the extents of the original Roman settlement and cathedral’s shere of influence. This project negotiates between the past and the present in how it reveals historical information while also injecting new life into a city square especially at night.

  1. It is interesting how the simple line drawn onto a surface can create such dominant boundary conditions. Looking at the picture, the bicycle seems to be doing the impossible by cutting through (or perhaps being cut by) the line of light. The three dimensionality of the mist only heightens that feeling.
