Exception, Modern, Transformative

The City-State of Hong Kong - Following the First Opium War, Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire which would remain under their control until 1997. With it's long reign under a western power, the political system differed from that of mainland China. The Basic Law of Hong Kong has independent judiciary functions under a common law framework. It would resume autonomy with the exception of foreign and military defense.

  1. I think you could also look at Hong Kong as a melding of different cultures. It obviously is inhabited mostly by native Chinese people, but Britain and its Western ideas have had a profound influence on the spaces and places of that island. Do you think the powers of the small/white/elite are greater than the Chinese masses? Also, think about what will happen when Hong Kong is no longer a Special Economic Zone. Do you think it will end up following all the restrictions present in other Chinese cities? Will Hong Kong no longer be a place of exception?
