Cooperation, Dispersed, Empowering

Houses, as acquired by the POWERHOUSE, are seen as containers for various social activities, including art, community gatherings, and religious teaching among others - mostly an affect of the low cost of housing and vacancy.  The architectural object is complemented by a community initiative, which reinforces the building’s ability to create new and reinforce existing social relationships between "classes, groups, and individuals" as promoted by Thomas Markus. The Powerhouse serves as an art studio, hosting three months residence periods for artists doing site specific work.

Cooperation, Extruded, Antithesis

The “podium + cap” buildings by both Herzog and de Mueron and SHoP Architects investigate
the relationship between existing, historic structures and new additions. The new additions are forms which contrast yet accentuate the existing architecture, embodying
ephemerality and permanence. Through this contrast -  the new being realized in a state of
exception from the rules and organization of the historic object - the architecture accents the historic object and heightens its worth.
